•The agreement between both entities was reached in Brussels during an annual forum on the European Union, attended by representatives from 40 countries
The eAtlantic Foundation and the Jacques Delors Friends of Europe Foundation have agreed this Thursday in Brussels to begin a mutual collaboration that will involve the coordination of their respective research work on shared areas of interest within the European sphere. The agreement was confirmed during two meetings held between representatives of both organisations within the framework of the Friends of Europe Forum, currently taking place in the Belgian capital.
The eAtlantic Foundation delegation was led by its President, Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu, its Director General, Marian Elorza, and its Principal Researcher, Juanjo Álvarez. Following the meetings, Urkullu expressed his satisfaction with the scope of this collaboration with a foundation of such recognised international prestige, noting that both organisations “share concerns and a common will to work towards a clear goal.”
During the morning meeting, Geert Cami and Pascal Lamy, representatives of the Jacques Delors Friends of Europe Foundation, learned about the main principles guiding eAtlantic’s work. In this regard, Iñigo Urkullu explained that the organisation he presides over was created with the purpose of “fostering, from civil society and in cooperation with existing collaborative networks, dynamics that promote understanding between public and private actors across the European Atlantic façade, in order to ensure the future prosperity of this geographic area.”
After identifying the main lines of action of both foundations, they agreed to establish a joint work plan that will include the coordination of their respective research teams. Within this cooperative framework, key areas of shared interest will be progressively defined, including the single market and security. This collaboration was later endorsed during a meeting between the eAtlantic delegation and the Board of the Jacques Delors Friends of Europe Foundation, chaired by Enrico Letta, who personally expressed his satisfaction with this new path of collaboration established between the two entities.
Reflection on europe
More than 200 guests from 40 countries are taking part in this annual Friends of Europe forum, which promotes reflection on essential issues for the present and future of the European Union. The programme includes debates on particularly relevant topics such as security, Europe’s position towards major global players like China and India, its relations with Latin American countries, and transatlantic relations.
Most coordinators of the working groups have highlighted the current moment as one of “special concern and interest” for the European Union, in areas such as geostrategic influence, the economy, and security.
